Both offshore oil rigs compared: scientists, locked crates, heavy scientist deployments, and how to approach each one.
Oil Rig and Large Oil Rig are two of the most rewarding monuments in Rust, sitting far offshore with elite loot through locked crates. Both require water or air transport to reach and demand real preparation to run safely.
A RHIB is the most common way. They spawn along the coast and at Fishing Villages. Motorboats work but are slower and less durable. A minicopter or scrap helicopter gives faster approach and landing directly on the platform. Plan your route and bring enough fuel for a round trip.
Blue scientists patrolling platforms and catwalks. A locked crate that takes 15 minutes to hack, after which a Chinook deploys 6 heavy scientists. Heavy scientists wear full armor and take about 5 headshots with a rifle to kill. Find a defensible position before hacking starts. The locked crate drops elite-tier loot. Full details in the Small Oil Rig guide.
Around 23 blue scientists and 12 heavy scientists deploying from the Chinook. Multi-level layout with more rooms and angles than Small Oil Rig. The heavy scientists are the primary challenge: they arrive in force and spread across the platform. Positioning before the Chinook lands is critical. Full details in the Large Oil Rig guide.
