Large Oil Rig is the most dangerous and rewarding offshore monument in Rust. This Tier 3 location demands serious preparation and firepower. You will face 20 heavy scientists in full blue hazmat gear with precise aim and high health pools. The offshore location requires a boat or minicopter, making this exclusively endgame content. The rewards justify the risk: military-grade loot from 7 military crates, 3 elite crates, and a hackable locked crate worth approximately 420 scrap on average.
Blue and red keycards are mandatory. Two electric fuses power the monument's systems. Bring multiple medical supplies for sustained healing through scientist encounters. A rifle with good accuracy handles ranged scientist engagement, backed by a shotgun for close quarters. 500+ ammunition is necessary given the heavy scientist durability. Boat or minicopter transport is mandatory.
The structure consists of two main vertical shafts with connecting corridors at multiple levels. The top section contains outdoor scientist spawns and exposed walkways. Middle levels house locked doors requiring blue and red keycards. Bottom interior contains fuse rooms and electrical systems. Scientists patrol all levels aggressively, ensuring constant combat throughout the run.
Twenty heavy scientists spawn across the monument, the most challenging scientist concentration in Rust. These enemies wear blue hazmat gear and demonstrate superior accuracy and health pools compared to standard scientists. They engage from range with rifles and push aggressively when exposed. Stay behind structural pillars and use cover effectively during fights. Medical supplies sustain you through their damage output, as healing between encounters is often impossible.
Navigate to the bottom level and clear scientists blocking the first fuse room. Insert your first fuse to restore partial power. Move to the blue keycard reader and swipe your blue card to unlock doors blocking access to upper military sections. Proceed to the second fuse box and insert your second fuse, restoring power to the highest sections and red locked doors. Navigate to the red keycard reader and swipe to unlock the final section containing the hackable locked crate.
Hacking the locked crate (15 minute timer) triggers a Chinook helicopter deployment with additional heavy scientists. Your team must defend or wait for the hack to complete. Solo attempts face extreme difficulty during this phase. Defend aggressively or retreat and return when ready.
Seven military crates yield tier 2 guns, springs, and metal fragments consistently. Three elite crates contain tier 3 weapons, weapon mods, and rare blueprints. The hackable locked crate is the marquee reward, guaranteed to contain endgame gear after the 15 minute unlock. Total yield approximately 420 scrap on average. Heavy scientists drop military-grade weapons, armor, and blueprints on death, adding significant value to each engagement.
Teams of 3-4 players give everyone downtime during the 15 minute hack to heal and resupply between scientist waves. Solo players face all 20 scientists alone and must defend the hack unassisted, which most attempts fail. Teams should post a dedicated lookout on deck during the hackable crate timer when everyone is stationary and vulnerable to external threats. Solos should run this only during low-population hours on servers with controlled PvP. Team coordination is essential, with designated roles for the scientist wave management and the hack defense. Communication throughout the run ensures everyone understands the current puzzle phase and resource status.
Large Oil Rig is a severe PvP hotspot on most servers. Clans monitor this location and actively hunt farming attempts. The offshore nature means trapped players cannot easily escape. If you see another team's boat or minicopter approaching, abort immediately. Plan your extraction route carefully and watch for incoming threats during the vulnerable 15 minute hack phase.
