Caves Guide

Caves are underground monuments scattered across the Rust map in multiple sizes and variants. Unlike traditional monuments with radiation, keycards, and puzzles, caves are simple: dark, defensible, and perfect for hidden base building. You'll find barrels, basic crates, ore nodes, and minecart tracks throughout cave systems. Building inside caves is possible and popular for players seeking truly hidden bases far from prying eyes.

Cave Variants and Sizes

Caves come in small, medium, and large variants. Small caves are quick to explore and low in loot. Medium caves offer better returns with more loot opportunities. Large caves are expansive, time-consuming, and contain the most resources. Choose your target based on time availability and team size. A solo player might clear a small cave in 10 minutes. A team exploring a large cave might spend an hour.

Each variant has different layouts and loot distributions. Spend time learning the cave networks on your server. Understanding the layout reduces exploration time significantly and helps you identify the best building locations.

Essential Gear

Bring a flashlight or headlamp. Caves are dark, and navigating without light is nearly impossible. Consider bringing backup light sources in case your primary fails.

Loot Distribution

Caves contain scattered barrels, basic crates, and occasional military crates depending on the cave size. No radiation protects the loot, so standard clothing works fine. No scientists spawn inside, and no puzzles block your path. The loot is purely accessible to anyone willing to explore and gather.

Ore nodes spawn naturally inside caves, making them excellent for metal and sulfur farming. If you're building a base inside a cave, you have ore access immediately, reducing your resource gathering needs significantly.

Hidden Base Building

Caves are the premier location for hidden base building. The underground nature makes your base invisible to airborne reconnaissance. Helicopters can't spot you. Scouts won't find you. The layout is defensible and naturally confusing to potential raiders. Many solo players and small teams build their main bases inside caves specifically for this stealth advantage.

Building inside caves has limitations. Darkness is a constant challenge. Lighting requires electricity or specific light sources. The cramped spaces limit building options compared to surface bases. But the security trade-off is worth it for paranoid players who prioritize survival over comfort.

Strategy

Choose a cave far from popular server hotspots. Your base is harder to find if the cave is off the beaten path. Distance from other players' bases provides additional security.

Minecart Tracks

Some cave systems feature minecart tracks. These tracks are functional transportation systems within caves. Minecarts allow you to move large quantities of items efficiently through the cave network. If your base is positioned on a minecart line, you have convenient item transportation. This is particularly useful for large-scale farming operations inside caves.

Exploration Tips

Bring rope or a secure method to mark your path. Cave layouts are confusing, and getting lost wastes time. Mark turns and dead ends as you explore. This prevents backtracking and helps you identify loot-rich areas to farm repeatedly. Some players place chests or lockers at key points to cache loot during extended caves exploration.

Travel with at least one teammate if possible. Caves are safe from radiation and scientists, but the darkness and confined spaces create paranoia. A teammate provides security and shared light sources. Solo exploration is possible but tedious.

No Scientists, No Radiation

Unlike traditional monuments, caves have no radiation and no hostile NPCs. You won't get shot at by scientists or harmed by rad zones. The only threats are other players and the cave environment itself. This makes caves excellent low-threat farming locations, especially early game when you're under-geared for scientist combat.

When to Cave Farm

Visit caves early and often. The barrels respawn every 5-10 minutes, making caves a consistent farming option throughout your wipe. The ore nodes are particularly valuable for metal and sulfur farming. If you're building a cave base, you essentially have infinite ore access directly from your base location.

PvP Considerations

Caves are dark and confusing, which makes them excellent ambush locations. Other players can hide in darkness waiting for you to harvest loot. Be cautious exploring unfamiliar caves. Listen for footsteps and other player indicators. If you encounter hostile players, your intimate knowledge of the cave layout gives you an advantage. Use the darkness to your benefit and escape through back passages they don't know.
