Player trading is fundamental to Rust's economy. Direct trades between players enable gear acquisition, resource pooling, and specialized commerce. Trading safely requires understanding game mechanics, knowing fair prices, and choosing secure locations. Master trading and you'll accumulate resources faster than solo farming.

Safe Trading Locations

Outpost

Outpost is the primary neutral trading hub. The monument is protected by turrets that shoot hostile players. Weapons are not confiscated. You can carry weapons inside, but any hostile action triggers the safe zone turrets. Inside Outpost, you can trade with other players without fear of PvP. NPCs sell and buy items at fixed prices. Many players congregate here specifically for trading. Use Outpost for high-value trades where security matters most.

Bandit Camp

Bandit Camp is a second neutral zone with NPC vendors. It lacks the heavy turret protection of Outpost but still prevents aggressive behavior inside the zone boundaries. Bandit Camp is smaller and sees less player traffic than Outpost, making it useful for private negotiations. Both locations have vending machines where players set prices.

Populated Areas

Trading outside safe zones requires witnesses and caution. Choose high-traffic areas where other players present a deterrent to theft. Beach areas near roads and main monuments are relatively safe for trades between known allies. Never trade alone in isolated areas. Always assume other players will betray you for valuable items.

Trading Mechanics

How to Trade

Meet a player in a safe location. There is no trading UI in vanilla Rust. Trading is done by dropping items on the ground, using vending machines, or exchanging through shop fronts or the ground. Confirm both sides have agreed to the exchange. Both players drop items at the same time to prevent theft. Trading requires mutual agreement and trust. Use team chat or Discord for confirmation before dropping items.

Trading Protocols

Agree on exact terms before trading. Say prices aloud and confirm in chat. Drop your items first if you initiated the trade. Wait for the other player to drop items. Never trust verbal agreements from strangers. Formalize trades in team chat with witnesses. Written records prevent disputes.

Trading scams are common

Players will bait-and-switch valuable items for worthless ones. Inspect items carefully before accepting. Watch for quick trades where someone tries to rush you. Always check item condition, stack sizes, and quality before accepting.

Valuable Trading Items

Keycards

Keycards are currency-equivalent. Green, blue, and red cards unlock monument rooms with valuable loot. Keycards maintain consistent value across wipes. Red cards are worth more than blue cards, which are worth more than green cards. Trading keycards for scrap is always safe.

Scrap

Scrap is the primary in-game currency. Players trade scrap for items constantly. Scrap purchases at Outpost NPCs create price baseline. One scrap is the minimum tradeable unit. Learn baseline prices before negotiating.

Ammunition

High-demand ammunition like 5.56 rounds, shotgun shells, and pistol ammo trade consistently. Ammo is fungible so values are predictable. Traders often buy bulk ammunition for base defense or PvP. Large ammunition stacks are valuable.

Weapons & Gear

Assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, and specialized tools trade actively. Condition matters. Damaged weapons are worth less. Check weapon durability before accepting high-value weapon trades. Armor and protective gear trade based on quality and rarity.

Components & Blueprints

Valuable components like springs, gears, and pipes trade for scrap or other items. Blueprints vary wildly in value. Rare blueprints command high prices. Common blueprints trade cheaply. Research server blueprint prices before trading rare drops.

Resources & Consumables

High-quality metal, sulfur, and gunpowder trade actively. Food and medical supplies trade for convenience. Water bottles and cooked meat rarely hold value except during early wipe. Focus on crafting-essential resources.

Price Evaluation

Understanding Baseline Prices

Outpost NPCs establish price floors. Research what each NPC buys and sells. These fixed prices determine fair trading value. Items more expensive to buy from NPCs command higher player trade prices. Items NPCs pay well for trade lower.

Supply and Demand

Early wipe, components are scarce and valuable. Late wipe, low-grade fuel crashes in value. Understand where the wipe cycle stands. Different items peak at different points. Early wipe raw materials, mid wipe explosives and high-tier gear, late wipe farming resources.

Server-Specific Markets

Each server develops its own economy. Prices vary between servers. Check other players' vending machines to understand local pricing. Don't assume prices from other servers apply. Always check local market before trading.

Negotiation Strategies

Start with a reasonable offer. Listen to counteroffers. Understand the other player's position. Be willing to walk away from bad trades. Fair trades benefit both sides. Repeat trading relationships matter more than squeezing one extra scrap. Build reputation as a fair trader.

Specialized Trading

Bulk Trades

Large quantities of raw materials trade in bulk. One player farms materials, another buys in bulk. Coordinate timing and location carefully. Bulk trades involve thousands of scrap. Use formal channels to confirm quantities and prices.

Raid Equipment Trading

Players trade explosives, weapons, and defensive gear for organized raids. These trades are high-value and high-risk. Meet in safe locations. Verify weapon quality and ammunition counts. Coordinate delivery timing precisely.

Knowledge Trading

Sharing monument knowledge, loot information, or base building advice trades for payment. More experienced players teach newer players. This trading form has no item component but still requires negotiation. Verbal agreements work when witnesses present.

Track trading partners

Remember who you've traded with and their reputation. Consistent traders become allies. Fair traders deserve return business. Scammers deserve avoidance. Player reputation carries weight on smaller servers.

Avoiding Scams

Inspect everything. Check item durability, stack sizes, and weapon condition. Watch for substituted items. Count currency carefully. Never trade valuable items to new players. Use vending machines for public sales to avoid direct negotiation. Take screenshots of high-value agreements.
