Recycling guide: monument locations, component values, scrap yields, efficient routes, inventory strategy.
Recycling is one of the highest-value mechanics in Rust. Components found in barrels, crates, and from scientist kills can be broken down into scrap, the primary resource for research and crafting. Understanding which components to keep, which to recycle, where to recycle, and when to recycle determines how quickly you advance through early and mid-game phases.
Recyclers are machines found at most monuments and safe zones. They accept components as input and output base materials: scrap, metal fragments, high-quality metal, cloth, and other resources. Walk up to a recycler, press E to open it, and place components into the input slots. The recycler processes one item at a time, converting it over several seconds. There is no cost to use a recycler and no skill requirement. Every player uses recyclers equally efficiently.
The recycler has an output slot where completed items appear. If the output is full, the recycler pauses processing. Empty the output regularly to prevent bottlenecks.
Recyclers exist in two categories: safe zone recyclers and monument recyclers. Safe zone recyclers are at Outpost and Bandit Camp. These provide 40 percent yield on all components. Monument recyclers exist at Lighthouse, Gas Station, Airfield, Train Yard, Water Treatment Plant, Power Plant, Junkyard, and Harbor. These provide higher yields but come with PvP risk.
The choice between safe and unsafe recyclers is a risk-reward calculation. Safe zone recycling takes longer because you must travel to Outpost or Bandit Camp peacefully. But you get to recycle safely and return without PvP threat. Monument recyclers are faster from many locations, but you risk encounters during travel and while recycling.
For early wipe when loot is abundant, the yield difference is acceptable and risk is minimal. Late wipe, the yield becomes significant and risk increases, so safe zone recycling becomes more attractive.
| Location | Yield Rate | Safety | Risk Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outpost (Safe Zone) | 40% | Highest | None if peaceful |
| Bandit Camp (Safe Zone) | 40% | Highest | None if peaceful |
| Lighthouse | Variable | Medium | Other players possible |
| Gas Station | Variable | High | Low unless in hot area |
| Airfield | Variable | Medium | Moderate |
| Train Yard | Variable | Low | Common conflict zone |
| Water Treatment Plant | Variable | Medium | Moderate |
| Power Plant | Variable | Medium | Moderate |
Always Recycle These Components
Rifle Body (25 scrap) - One of the highest single-item returns. Recycle unless actively crafting rifles. Always prioritize rifle bodies.
Tech Trash (20 scrap + 1 HQM) - Valuable for scrap return. Early wipe, recycle freely. Late wipe, hoard for C4 crafting.
Semi-Automatic Body (15 scrap + 1 HQM) - Excellent return. Recycle unless crafting SAR or SAP.
SMG Body (15 scrap + metal frags) - Similar to semi bodies. Recycle excess.
Metal Spring (10 scrap + metal frags) - Moderately valuable. Recycle extras unless crafting weapons requiring springs.
Situational Recycling
Metal Pipe (5 scrap) - Extremely common. Recycle excess but keep a small stack for crafting.
Road Signs (3 scrap + metal frags) - Low scrap value. Recycle in bulk when you have 20+ items.
Never Recycle These
Gears - Poor recycling value and needed for workbenches. Always keep a buffer of at least 10 gears.
Rope - Used constantly for crafting and traps. Never recycle unless you have thousands.
Cloth - Always in demand. Never recycle unless you have extreme excess.
Electric Fuses - If crafting electrical components, hoard fuses. Only recycle when you have excess.
Before recycling, mentally list what you plan to craft in the next few hours. Separate loot into two piles: keep and recycle. Keep pile gets transported to base storage. Recycle pile goes directly to the nearest recycler. This discipline prevents the common mistake of recycling something you need later.
Example: You return with 20 metal pipes, 10 metal springs, 3 rifle bodies, 15 cloth. You plan to craft a SAR, upgrade walls, and build a workbench. SAR needs 1 spring (you have 10). Wall upgrade needs 500 stone. Workbench needs 2 pipes (you have plenty). So: keep 3 pipes minimum, keep 1 spring, recycle 3 rifle bodies (75 scrap), recycle 8 springs, recycle the rest.
Early wipe: Use Outpost or Bandit Camp exclusively. Safe zone recyclers let you repeat trips without PvP threat. The 40 percent yield is acceptable early on.
Mid-wipe: Shift to monument recyclers on your regular farming route. If running Gas Station, recycle while you are there. If running Airfield, recycle before leaving. Batching approach saves time.
Late wipe: Recycle only high-value items at safe zones. Rifle bodies, tech trash, and semi bodies justify the trip. Low-value items stay in base inventory. This minimizes trips while maximizing scrap income.
Different loot sources provide different components. Barrels and regular crates provide scattered low-value components. Military crates provide rifle bodies, springs, and tech trash. Elite crates and locked rooms provide highest-value components. Scientist kills also provide valuable drops.
Consider the source when planning recycling. A full military crate run should end with a recycling trip because you will have multiple rifle bodies. A barrel-farming run accumulates low-value items only worth recycling when bulk.
Before leaving your base for loot, decide in advance where you will recycle. If running Outpost, you will recycle there. If running Lighthouse, decide if you will recycle on-site or carry components back. This plan prevents wasted trips.
Mistake one: Recycling before calculating your component needs. This leads to running out of metal pipes or rope and realizing too late you should have kept them. Always plan before recycling.
Mistake two: Recycling at safe zones when monument recyclers are nearby. The yield loss compounds over a wipe. Use monument recyclers whenever possible mid-wipe.
Mistake three: Hoarding low-value components and never recycling them. Metal pipes and road signs take inventory space. Recycle in bulk rather than hoarding.
