Radiation is an environmental hazard found at certain monuments and high-tier landmarks. It causes continuous health damage if you lack adequate protection. Understanding radiation mechanics, gear values, and monument hazard levels is essential for safe monument farming and efficient endgame progression.

Radiation Mechanics

Radiation causes continuous health damage based on radiation intensity and your protection gap. Low radiation zones do minimal damage. Extreme radiation zones kill unprotected players in seconds. Protection works by subtracting your gear value from incoming radiation damage. If you have 25 protection and the zone is 30 radiation per second, you take 5 damage per second. If zone radiation exceeds your protection, you take the difference as direct damage per second.

Different monument zones have varying radiation intensity. Entry areas are typically safe. Puzzle rooms and loot chambers have medium radiation. Reactor cores and extreme hazard areas have lethal radiation. Never enter high-radiation zones without verifying your protection is sufficient.

Radiation Protection Gear

Hazmat SuitHazmat Suit - Provides 25 radiation protection points. This is the single highest protection from a single item. A full hazmat suit blocks 25 radiation damage per second. Hazmat suits are craftable at workbench level 2 using 5 Tarp, 2 Sewing Kit, and 8 High Quality Metal. They are cheap enough to replace if damaged.

Lead-Lined Armor - Lead pieces provide 5 radiation protection each. A full lead set (helmet, vest, pants) provides 15 total protection. Lead armor requires workbench level 3 and is more expensive than hazmat. Lead pieces are better for layering protection with other gear.

Gas MaskGas Mask - Provides minimal radiation protection but is useful early wipe. Gas masks cost 20 cloth and 10 rope and are easy to craft. They provide temporary protection until you upgrade to hazmat.

Mixing gear types creates cumulative protection. A hazmat suit plus lead helmet gives 25 + 5 = 30 total protection. Hazmat plus full lead set gives 25 + 15 = 40 total protection, sufficient for almost all radiation zones.

Monument Radiation Levels

Low Radiation Monuments - Satellite Dish, Gas Station, Harbor (exterior). These require minimal or no protection. A gas mask or basic clothing suffices. Safe for early-wipe exploration.

Medium Radiation Monuments - Water Treatment Plant, Sewer Branch, Airfield (exterior). These require 15+ protection. Full hazmat suit or lead armor. Safe for mid-wipe players with proper gear.

High Radiation Monuments - Power Plant, Military Tunnels, Cargo Ship. These require 25+ protection. Full hazmat suit or hazmat plus lead combinations. Dangerous for unprepared players. Bring medical supplies.

Extreme Radiation Monuments - Oil Rig (reactor core), Underwater Lab (reactor core). These require 30-40+ protection. Hazmat plus full lead set or electric protective gear. Only attempt with endgame gear and team support.

Radiation Hotspots Within Monuments

Not all areas of monuments are equally radioactive. Entry areas are typically safer. Loot rooms and reactor cores have extreme radiation. Plan your route to minimize time in high-radiation zones. Spend 5 minutes learning each monument layout before attempting. Some monuments have radiation pockets where you might be safe in one room and deadly in the next.

Move slowly through unfamiliar areas. Watch your radiation damage numbers. If you are taking damage, retreat and re-gear. Do not push further without adequate protection. Experienced players memorize safe corridors and shortcut paths, skipping high-radiation areas entirely.

Crafting Radiation Gear

Hazmat suits are craftable at workbench 2 using 5 Tarp, 2 Sewing Kit, and 8 High Quality Metal. Cloth comes from hemp farming or loot crates. Rope is crafted from cloth. Hazmat is cheap enough to replace if damaged. Always craft backup suits. Keep 3-4 suits in base storage. Damaged hazmat might not provide enough protection for extreme zones. Fresh suits ensure maximum protection.

Lead armor requires advanced furnace smelting. Lead ore spawns at certain rad towns and monuments. Smelt lead ore into lead metal at furnace. Craft lead armor at workbench 3 using lead metal and metal fragments. Lead gear is expensive but highly protective for late-wipe monument farming.

Radiation Management Strategy

Early wipe avoid high-radiation monuments entirely. Focus on low-tier rad towns and safe monuments. Craft your first hazmat suit at workbench 2. Progress to water treatment and sewer branches.

Mid-wipe craft lead armor and attempt power plant. Late-wipe stack full gear and take on extreme radiation zones like military tunnels. This progression prevents early wipe deaths and rewards skilled navigation.

During team monument runs, ensure every member has adequate radiation protection. Coordinate healing between runs. Organized teams manage radiation better than solos. See the Status Effects guide for additional radiation management tips.
