Rust includes a quest system that offers structured objectives and rewards. Quests are available at multiple safe-zone monuments, offered by NPC mission givers. They provide an alternative income stream for scrap and items, useful during early wipe or when monument running is too dangerous.

How Quests Work

Walk up to a mission-giver NPC at any safe zone, interact with them, and browse available quests. Accept a quest and the objective appears in your HUD. Complete the objective, return to the NPC, and collect your reward. You can only have one active quest at a time. Abandoning a quest does not penalize you but forfeits your progress. Quests have cooldown timers that reset after completion, allowing you to take the same quest again after a set period.

Quest difficulty varies from simple gathering tasks to multi-stage objectives. Some quests require travel across the map, creating risk if you encounter other players. Others are completable in a short session near safe zones. Plan which quests fit your playstyle.

Quest Types

Gathering Quests - Collect a specific resource like wood, stone, metal ore, sulfur, or cloth and deliver it. If you are already farming, accepting a gathering quest before you leave means you get paid for resources you were gathering anyway. These are efficient for bootstrapping early game scrap.

Hunting Quests - Kill specific animals and return with their meat or drops. Bears, boars, deer, and wolves are typical targets. These quests push players toward hunting, which newer players sometimes neglect. Hunting also provides food for your inventory.

Kill Quests - Eliminate a number of hostile NPCs, usually scientists at monuments. You pick up loot and components from kills, so these quests reward you for monument runs you were already planning. Scientific loot often covers the questcosts.

Delivery Quests - Take an item from one location to another. These require travel and carry risk of running into hostile players. They reward scrap but demand time investment. Useful for steady income but less efficient than gathering.

Treasure Quests - Locate hidden treasures or resources scattered across the map. These are exploratory quests that reward you for finding landmarks and landmarks. Great for learning the map layout.

Quest Rewards

Quest rewards typically include scrap, blueprints, consumables, and occasionally unique items. The scrap rewards range from 50 to 200 depending on difficulty. Running a few quests between monument runs supplements your income without much extra effort. Early-wipe quests often reward basic tools like hatchets or pickaxes, useful for new players establishing farming routes.

Some quests reward blueprints for weapons or components, giving free research that would otherwise cost significant scrap. Late-wipe quest rewards are less valuable but still provide passive income for minimal effort.

Quest Locations

Quest NPCs are located at: Outpost (multiple quest givers near the center), Bandit Camp (quest givers within the compound), Fishing Village (docks area), and Stables (animal-focused quests). Both Outpost and Bandit Camp have multiple mission givers with different quest pools. Visit both locations to maximize available quests.

Quest NPCs remain in fixed locations and do not roam. Learn where each quest giver stands so you can quickly navigate to them on repeat visits.

Safe Zone Rules and Quest Strategy

All quest NPCs reside in safe zones. You must follow safe zone rules: no weapons visible, no attacking other players, and no throwing explosives. Safe zones provide perfect opportunity to browse multiple quest givers and accept multiple quests simultaneously (though only one can be active at a time).

Strategy: Accept quests before heading out for monument runs or farming. During the run, focus on the quest objective while farming normally. Combine your normal play with quest progress to maximize returns. Return to safe zone after completing objective and collect your reward.

Stagger quests for continuous income

Accept one quest before leaving your base. Complete it during your normal activities. Return, collect reward, immediately accept a new one. This creates continuous passive income from quests you were doing anyway.
