Gesture and Emote Commands in Rust

Gestures and emotes let you communicate without voice. Learn every gesture, how to bind them to keys, and tactical uses for squad coordination.

What Are Gestures and Emotes?

Gestures are animations your character performs. They are useful for silent communication, celebrations, and memes. You can bind gestures to hotkeys for quick access. Some gestures are default, others require specific items equipped.

Emotes are similar but often include text or sounds. They are perfect for squad communication when voice comms are down or you want silent callouts. See the console commands guide for binding syntax details.

Basic Gestures (No Items Required)

Gesture Command Animation Duration Use Case
Wave gesture wave Friendly wave 2 seconds Greeting, "all clear"
Thumbs Up gesture thumbsup Approve gesture 2 seconds Agreement, "good job"
Thumbs Down gesture thumbsdown Disapprove gesture 2 seconds Disagreement, "bad idea"
Salute gesture salute Military salute 2 seconds Respect, squad leader signal
Dance gesture dance Celebration dance 3 seconds Victory, loot celebration
Cry gesture cry Crying emote 2 seconds Death taunt, failed raid
Clap gesture clap Applause 2 seconds Approval, sarcasm
Pissed gesture pissed Angry emote 2 seconds Frustration signal

How to Bind Gestures to Keys

Basic Binding Syntax

Open console with F1. Type: bind <key> "gesture <gesture_name>"

Example: bind f "gesture wave" makes F key trigger a wave.

Example Bindings

Multiple Bindings

You can bind multiple gestures. Use different keys. Stack them together in console by typing each bind and hitting Enter. These persist across sessions once bound.

Unbinding

Type unbind <key> to remove a binding. Example: unbind f removes F key binding.

Armed Gestures (Weapon-Specific)

Some gestures activate only when holding specific weapons. These are less common but add personality.

These trigger automatically during combat. You cannot manually activate armed gestures. They are just flavor.

Tactical Communication Uses

Squad Signals

Use gestures for silent squad callouts when voice comms are compromised or disabled.

Negotiations and Betrayal

Wave to signal peaceful intent. Thumbs up to agree to trade. Cry to fake surrender (then attack for betrayal). Clap sarcastically after a failed peace agreement. Gestures add mind games to interactions.

Tournament and Competitive Play

Salute before 1v1 duels. Thumbs up to acknowledge good fight. Wave to accept surrender. Cry for dramatic defeat. Emotes create rivalry and sportsmanship.

Celebration and Social Gestures

Post-Raid Victory

Dance when you complete a successful raid. Clap to celebrate looted bases. Wave to groups you just destroyed (taunt). Thumbs up for clean raid execution.

Monument Completion

Salute after clearing a tough monument. Dance when you get amazing loot. Cry if you die to traps (humor). Thumbs up to teammates for good work.

Base Building

Thumbs up when base is complete. Dance to celebrate finishing. Wave when inviting teammates to admire. Salute your TC like a commander.

Creating Custom Gesture Binds

Gesture Macro Setup

Combine multiple gestures into a sequence. Type in console: bind j "gesture wave; gesture thumbsup"

This makes J key do wave then thumbs up. Useful for quick communication chains. For longer sequences, separate commands with semicolons.

Squad-Standard Binds

Establish team standards. Everyone binds gestures to same keys. This prevents confusion during tactical situations. Agreed bindings:

All squad members use same bindings. This eliminates confusion and speeds communication.

Gesture Cooldowns and Limitations

Do not rely on gestures during active combat. They are best for planning phases and between-engagement communication. Quick gesture spam looks silly and breaks immersion.

Psychological Warfare

Gestures are psychological tools. Use them strategically.

Mind games win fights. A well-timed gesture can distract enemies or mislead negotiations. Rust community thrives on this chaos.

Pro Tips

Bind your most-used gestures immediately. Wave and thumbs up are essential. Create squad-standard bindings for team play. Use gestures for silent communication when voice is down. Never gesture during actual combat, too slow and exposes position.

Taunt after kills to get in attacker heads. Mock failed raids with sarcastic gestures. Coordinate gestures with teammates before raids. Practice gesture timing to look smooth. Stream-friendly emotes avoid toxicity accusations. Gestures are fun, do not take them seriously but do use them strategically.
